Repeated Elements
Utilizing Patterns to Boost Visual Appeal
In strict terms, repeated elements are not a distinct composition technique but rather a direction of thought when observing a scene. By identifying and extracting repeated elements within a scene, we can guide the viewer’s attention and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the photograph.
For example, in this photograph of the desert, I placed the repeating stakes at the very core, focusing on the repeating elements to emphasize what I was observing.
Similarly, this example focuses only on repeating elements.
Photos can also gain a sense of intrigue through coincidental repetition. In this image, the presence of four people photographing the sunrise highlights the theme through the repeated element of their actions.
