Composition Introduction
In this chapter, we’ll discuss composition.
Once we have a clear idea of what we want to capture and convey in our photos, composition helps us to accurately express our vision. Questions such as where to position the main subject in the frame, how to photograph grand architecture, and how to choose the aspect ratio for different types of photos are all crucial considerations.
In the basics of composition, I will introduce eight composition rules. Although listing them all might seem overwhelming, don’t worry. All composition rules are based on a single principle: helping us to express ourselves accurately. By understanding the logic behind each rule through this principle, mastering them will become easier.
Before we begin, there’s one very important thing I need to mention. You might not be able to achieve this immediately, but it’s important to have an awareness of it: composition rules are a double-edged sword. In the initial learning phase, they can quickly enhance our ability to accurately express the content of our photos. However, after some time, you might find that these rules can actually limit your creative expression.
At the start, we need to practice composition extensively. But once you are familiar with composition, you can try to “forget composition.” Composition rules are there to help us learn how to express ourselves accurately. Once we can do this naturally, we can let go of the framework.
